Meeting The Owner
Hi, I'm Haley Cooper-Williams. I'm 26 years old and the owner of Cooper’s - One Stop Confidence Shop, a mobile plus-size boutique here in Crossville. I've been a local to Crossville all my life and love this beautiful place I get to call home. I've been married to my husband, Thomas, for 4 years, and he is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. We have four fur babies who are basically our children - Roscoe, Nora Ann, Milo, and Sheba. I currently work full-time at the Fair Park Senior Center here in town, and I love it so much. I am thankful for the opportunity to showcase my business through this blog, and I hope that it is an encouragement to anyone wanting to chase their dreams of being a small business owner.

Small-Business Spotlight
What inspired you to start your business?
I was inspired to start my business by my love for fashion and people. My main goal is to empower plus-size women and make them feel confident in their bodies. I want them to know that all bodies are beautiful and that they don't need to conform to societal standards. Throughout my life, I've struggled to find clothing in stores that cater to my size, which left me feeling insecure and anxious about shopping. I want my business to be a safe and empowering place for women of all ages and sizes, whether they're a size 14 or 24.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?
I think it's important to fully commit and be true to yourself. When you have a small business, it's common to be tempted by the progress and success of others, and it's easy to feel disheartened when your own business doesn't seem to be keeping pace. I've certainly been guilty of this. We all want our businesses to succeed and grow, but that takes time and a lot of hard work. Many people mistakenly believe that owning a small business is all about sunny days and easy success, but the reality is that there are tough and challenging days too. Prepare yourself for both the good and bad times, and approach them as they come. Keep your focus on your goals and enjoy the journey. Before you know it, your business will be flourishing and thriving just like the others!
How did you market your business when it was brand new?
Social media is like the beating heart of today's world! Without platforms like Facebook and TikTok, it would've been really tough for me to get my business off the ground. Some older folks might think that social media is harming the younger generation, but I truly believe that when used wisely, it has been a game-changer for connecting with new people, making new friends, boosting sales, and building lasting customer relationships.
What is your favorite part of growing up in Crossville?
I truly understand and appreciate the warmth of the hospitality in our town. Having been a part of this community for 26 years and observing its growth, I empathize with the concern of losing our "hometown feeling." But every time I take a casual drive through my neighborhood, exchanging waves with neighbors, or see familiar faces at Cancun's after church on Sundays, it's evident that the hometown spirit is still very much alive in our little town.
What is the hardest part about being a business owner?
I'd say the toughest part of being a business owner is finding the right work/life balance. Some days it's a real challenge juggling a 9-5 job, coming home to work on your business, and still making time for your family and yourself. It feels like a never-ending battle, but somehow you make it work. I'm so grateful for my family and husband who have always supported me in my business and have encouraged me to keep working towards my goals. They're always there for me every step of the way!
What is the best part of owning a small business?
I absolutely love the fact that I get to meet so many new people on my journey with my business. If it wasn't for my business, I wouldn't have had the chance to meet half of the amazing people that I know today. One of my best friends, Katelyn, is someone I met through one of my vendor events when I first opened Cooper’s. My business connects me with the specific plus size community, and I get to meet so many beautiful and inspiring women. I am incredibly grateful for all the lovely ladies that I have met and now get to call my friends and family!
How have you grown personally since becoming a business owner?
I have reclaimed my confidence and cultivated a newfound respect for myself. I now fully recognize my capacity for greatness and hold myself to higher standards. Yes, I still have my days when I feel like withdrawing and complaining, but I am all about the comeback. This journey has empowered me to break free from my shell. While I am known for being friendly and approachable, I also grapple with anxiety when meeting new people and venturing outside of my comfort zone. This experience has heightened my awareness and deepened my understanding of the value of treating others with empathy and compassion. It has instilled in me a profound sense of self-respect and respect for others.
How do you think growing up in Crossville affects your business?
Living my whole life in Crossville has been a true blessing. My parents knowing everyone in town has been a great help for my business, but I understand that in today's world, connections are crucial. I believe people genuinely want to support local businesses and contribute to our community, and that means the world to us small business owners. While Crossville may not be as grand as neighboring cities, the small-town charm really sustains our small businesses.

What sets Cooper's apart from other businesses?
In addition to our stylish and affordable plus-size clothing, we also offer consignment services. We accept gently used items from others' closets and help them generate some extra cash—all they need to do is pack up their items, and we'll handle the rest. This concept originated from my frequent "closet clean-outs" driven by my shopping addiction and the need for more space. Many others like me were looking for fashionable clothes at budget-friendly prices, which led us to introduce consignment at Cooper's. We take pride in making both new and gently used items affordable. These consignment items are featured in a dedicated thread on the Cooper's page, providing an opportunity for over 1,800 followers to browse and shop. We also regularly ship to various cities and states. Keep an eye on the group page for updates on the availability of consignment slots, and feel free to express your interest!
